YouGlish is Astonishing!!

YouGlish for English Language Learning!

Hi!! Welcome to my blog!! When many people think of 'learning English on YouTube', they may think of subscribing to an English learning channel, watching videos and studying... But there's a completely different way to utilise them!
When you learn a new word or phrase, have you ever wished you could hear an example sentence with audio and subtitles to see how it is actually used? Today I will introduce you to a astonishing tool for your students!

The tool I recommend is YouGlish! YouGlish is a very useful website for beginners to advanced language learners to fulfil such selfish wishes. And you can incorporate this tool to support their English learning!!

How to Use YouGlish

1. how to search

First, enter the word or phrase you want to hear in the search window.

Next, choose which accent of English you want to hear.

2. how to watch the video

This time, we have searched for the word "take advantage of".
Here are the search results.

When I chose British English, I got 566 video hits.
The video tells you how and when to use the word or phrase you searched for.The great thing about this site is that it has subtitles! So learners can watch the video in Japanese!

What's more, the words and phrases you search for are highlighted, making them very easy to understand!!

And, this site will also give you tips to improve your English pronunciation.

Limitations

Words that change form, such as verbs, should be noted. This is because this site searches for the exact words you search for.

For example, the phrase "learn one's lesson" (learn a lesson, learn from one's mistakes). If you search for this as it is, you will get no hits.

When actually used in conversation, the verb "learn" becomes the past tense (learned) or the form "learns" with the "s" in the third person singular.

Also, "one's" is a generic term for the possessive ("of"), because it is actually used with words such as "my" (mine), "your" (your), etc.

So, when searching for such phrases, search for the form actually used in the sentence. This time, I searched for 'learned his lesson' and I got 115 hits!! Yay!!

The name 'YouGlish' might somehow lead you to think that it is an English-only site, but it is also available in other languages.

Or learners could try to learn a new language while studying English.
Teachers can ask them to use this tool to find out how to use the vocabulary and phrases they have learned in class that day as homework!! OF course, how to pronounce them as well!!

  1. Hi Yuki, we've reviewed the same tool! You've considered an attention-required point- this was very thoughtful and useful, thanks. Yes, I liked the point that YouGlish actually provides more than just English (they should change the name now? haha) with different accents (of English for now). With authentic data, it'd be more fun for learners to learn languages. Thanks!

  4. Hi Yukiko,
YouGlish is really interesting! I have actually started to use it to learn about the pronunciation of some words that were confusing to me. I like the way you can use it to learn how to use words and phrases in authentic context. By listening to the words and phrases repeatedly, you finally become familiar with them.
