WebQuest is the Best!!

WebQuest is the Smartest Way for EFL

Hi!! Welcome to my blog!! Do you use Internet in your English language teaching? The Internet is a huge educational resource and an effective tool for both learners and teachers. But, it is not always easy for teachers to use Internet as a teaching tool because the amount of information is so vast and the quality of the information is not consistent, making it difficult to provide learning materials in a way that is accessible to learners...Do you agree?

But today I'm going to introduce you to a innovative online teaching material called WebQuest!! WebQuest is a teaching resource that allows for students to engage in problem-solved leaning tasks through a variety of activities, using information resources carefully selected by the teacher. So, it is a tool for 'scaffolding' that is of high value to both of us!! I would recommend you to use this tool for primary school students and secondary school students.

Today, I'm going to write about my favourite WebQuest 'Use Your English' you can use in your classroom!!

Here is the link:https://webquest.org

'Introduction' page

What an intriguing introduction!! Students can actually use English they learned in classes to make friends with native English speakers and learn about the cultures of English-speaking countries.

'Task' page

Team-collaborating tasks are always good for encouraging students' autonomy!! And here, the website give them specific tool (PenPalWorld.com) so that students can easily find a new friend in the English-speaking countries and write letters to them. By making friends with him/her, students will not only gain a better understanding of different cultures, but will also learn about their own. This is exactly what practical English learning is all about!!

'Process' page

The process is explained in a way that is easy for students to understand, so they can work together on their own to complete the task without the help of teachers (Task-based learning).

'Evaluation' page

Finally, by evaluating each other and themselves, students can objectively and subjectively quantify the extent to which they have achieved their work. If they can use their own reflections in their next tasks, this will help them to grow in their independence and motivation, which will in turn help to motivate them to learn English!

Limitations

One issue is computer literacy. Learners who are familiar with computers can grasp the whole WebQuest in a short time and perform the tasks smoothly, but learners who are not familiar with computers may not be able to grasp the whole process easily. Ideally, therefore, the teacher should provide an explanation in Japanese at the beginning and all learners should be able to tackle the task without difficulty. It is also a good idea to take a questionnaire after the class, as the teacher cannot know the process of how they solved the problem and what they thought about.

YouTube

I think this is one of the best YouTube videos which will help you to know how to use this tool. HAVE A LOOK!!

  2. Hi Yuki

Thank You for introducing this WebQuest to us. With the task inside, I think students can have a thorough knowledge on different culture. I like the task that students need to write a letter to their friends in order to know the culture and habits, as this has the additional aim on training up their writing skills and widen their vocabulary as well. I believe that students will benefit from the WebQuest you recommended. :)

  3. Hi Yuki, you've mentioned the 'evaluation' session that it's going to be helpful for learners if they could do and refer to own reflections in future performance. That'd be their learning point and yes, could be a motivating factor too. Plus, you've thought of autonomy and group-work together. That would bring more creative ideas, wouldn't it? :)

  4. Hi Yuki! I like the way you present your ideas. :) Reading your post is very relaxing. According to what you said, this is really a nice WebQuest with detail explanation of process and evaluation, which improves learners' autonomy and motivation. Apart from those points, I think the topic of making friends with people from English-speaking countries also makes this WebQuest stand out from others because learners can learn English from those friends from a long-term perspective after tasks in WebQuest are finished. Good job!!

  6. Hi Yuki
I like the way you help the reader understand how this webquest is organised. It is helpful that the teacher shares the evaluation criteria to know what is expected from them.
